Ontario Senior Home Safety Tax Credit

You might be eligible for this tax credit if:

• You were a resident of Ontario on December 31, 2024

• You’re a senior (over 65 years old) or have senior relatives living with you;

• You paid for renovations in 2024that improved the safety and accessibility of your principal residence (the main house, apartment, trailer, or any other type of household where you live).

This refundable tax credit is worth 25% of the cost of your renovations. You can claim up to $10,000 for your expenses, meaning the highest refund you can get is $2,500.

You can claim expenses such as:

• Adding grab bars and other reinforcements around the toilet, bathtub, and shower;

• Installing wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, or an elevator;

• Updating to non-slip flooring; and

• Any renovations needed to allow a senior to live on the first floor of their home.

Remember to keep your receipts in case the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asks to see them later.

Follow these steps in H&R Block's tax software:

Before you begin, make sure that you told us that you lived in Ontario on December 31, 2024.

1. On the left navigation menu, under the Credits & deductions tab, click Other.

   

2. Under the SPECIFIC CREDITS FOR YOUR PROVINCE heading, select the checkbox labelled Ontario seniors’ home safety tax credit (Schedule ON(S12)).

3. When you arrive at the page for the Ontario seniors’ home safety tax credit, enter your information into the tax software.
