Warning: Ontario CARE tax credit

You’ll see the following warning message on the ERRORS page in H&R Block's tax software if, you lived in Ontario as of December 31st, 2024 and entered child care expenses in your return, but you did not enter amounts on lines 23400, 21400, and 23500 from your spouse’s 2024 tax return:

You entered child care expenses in your return. To properly calculate your Ontario childcare access and relief from expenses tax credit, we need some amounts from your spouse’s {taxyear} T1 General form. On the Schedule 2 page, enter these amounts: Net income before adjustments (line 23400), child care expenses (line 21400), and social benefits repayment (line 23500). If your spouse has no amounts to report, you can enter 0 for these fields on the Schedule 2 page or ignore this warning. [warning]

 

How do I fix this?

Enter the following amounts from your spouse’s 2024 T1 General form on the Schedule 2 page in your return:

  • Net income before adjustments (line 23400)
  • Child care expenses (line 21400)
  • Social benefits repayment (line 23500)

If your spouse doesn’t have amounts on these lines, you can enter 0 for these fields on the Schedule 2 page or ignore this warning.

Follow these steps in H&R Block’s 2024 tax software to enter these amounts on the Schedule 2 page in your return:

  1. On the left navigation menu, under the Credits & deductions tab, click Required.

  2. Navigate to the Your spouse's return page.

  3. Enter information from your spouse’s return into the designated fields on this page.
